This is to document my research. No more action needed by the maintainer. According to http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00010.html, the DEB_*_ARCH_CPU variables only contain the CPU string as opposed to DEB_*_ARCH which also contain the OS string on non-Linux. So, a backport which dumbly replaces DEB_*_ARCH_CPU with DEB_*_ARCH should work fine on Linux.
