I face the same issue. $ totem audio.wav It plays the audio file
$ xdg-open audio.wav Totem opens and shows the videos available on my computer. It doesn't play the audio file. There is inconsistency between those behavior. I would expect it plays the audio file. I don't have the issue with VLC.
