Aptitude marks the stable version of the driver for installation but that breaks the X server because it conflicts with all old drivers. Quitting aptitude and starting it again allows instaling the driver.
This you observe these problems after the version that you mention? The resolver was heavily changed in the versions after the one that you are using, or maybe it was a bug that was fixed while the associated reports remained open.
