When I want to generate a dummy build-essential package with equivs, I get this: dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown information field 'Build-Essential' in input data in package's section of control info file Yet, the official build-essential package has such a field: $ apt-cache show build-essential:amd64 | grep '^Build-Ess' Build-Essential: yes So, since it's an "official" field, probably dpkg-gencontrol should know about it and not issue a warning.
