You seem not aware that Debian _tracks_ security updates in stable. Just not features. We backport security fixes to the current version in stable. See e.g. https://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xscreensaver/news/20160112T063226Z.html for the last security update in Jessie (i.e. the aforementioned version) and see https://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xscreensaver.html for the remaining security updates in oldstable and oldoldstable (no more supported now). > That is why he specifically suggests Gnome's screensaver: it's a as > hardened as a luggage lock.
