tags 287157 + moreinfo stop make CFLAGS=stuff is the normal way to communicate additional variables to makefiles, especially if the package only has a makefile and no autoconf. Packages that cannot handle this are broken. It would be helpful if you could point out specific examples so we could consider this in detail.
