The README.Debian file even mentions some issues with automatic configuration... I have made the following change to fix the permission issue you have noticed: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/smokeping.git/commit/?id=581973c272e3dfbe83b585536187764c5f4615a4 I have also made sure the package enables the CGI module on install. I am not sure this is the best solution, but it's all I could think of now. This will be shipped in the next upload.
