I contacted mercurial devs about demandimport failing with the _thread module, and one of them told me to just blacklist _thread for demandimport in the gajim-omemo code. I still feel that the issue should be addressed in a more general way, but I guess for now I'll suggest the gajim-omemo devs to just blacklist _thread.
