Hi,
I had exactly the same problems as described above, but eventually found
a workaround which fixed it for me:
First, I used lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings to play around with some
settings and ended up with this /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf:

[greeter]
background = #000000
hide-user-image = true
allow-debugging = true
-----
lightdm was working again, but looked kind of ugly. Then I deleted
/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf and to my surprise, that fixed it!
I tried a lot more like re-installing "ligthdm*", but can't reconstruct
this in all details. I hope this post is still useful!
