I would like to leave these parameters unchanged from their default
values, commenting their entries on the configuration file, but then, the
same invalid default values harcoded on laptop_mode are used causing an
error to be printed:

Laptop mode /usr/sbin/laptop_mode: line 606: echo: write error: Invalid
argument

The "fastest" and "slowest" values only indicate to laptop-mode-tools that the values in /sys/devices/system/cpu/CPU0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq and cpuinfo_min_freq should be used, respectively. Do these files exist in your system? If not, what kernel version and architecture are you running?
