so some variable substitution seems to fail at build time.
I believe it comes from the extraneous ^ in the debian/rules in:
debian/axiom.1: debian/axiom.1.in
mkdir -p $(@D)
cat $< | sed "s,[EMAIL PROTECTED]@,$(VER),g" >$@
chmod +x $@
