Hi. I'm not sure that's a reasonable thing to support, especially now that stretch is the next version. So much has changed in pip in the meantime, that I think it will be too difficult to backport or otherwise make unstable's pip work in any older versions.
Sorry for not getting to this bug in such a long time. Please let me know if it's obsolete and can be closed.
