I had the exact same error with all my ralink, broadcom and realtek adapters. Adding the lines to NetworkManager.conf
[device] wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no fixed them all. I did not have the problem with the internal Atheros on my Inspiron. Fixing this is excellent, I no longer have to use wicd to connect as I prefer NetworkManager.
