There is a better possibility - you can change the \fontdimen parameter in lmodern.sty, giving it a new version number. This way it is clear that it is a Debian-patched version. The essentials of the patch can be found at http://groups.google.de/groups?selm=Xns94F369657E5B6nililandnililandabcd%40nililand.de (german, but the important stuff is in TeX which you understand better).
