but this is a general kernel problem. You need to run at least the "modules_prepare" target inside of the kernel tree before doing anything with modules. linux-headers-... packages do it right and come with a working modpost utility. linux-source-... generated by kernel-package is almost pristine, you need to setup it first. I am not sure about the best way to work around the problem. IMO kernel-package should also detect incomplete environment and run the modules_prepare rule before using modules_image target.
