I urge you not to wait for the latter.
Relibtoolising doesn't help because of pkg-config. In fact, control-center's upstream already uses the Debian patched libtool. Furthermore, --as-needed doesn't work because of libtool bug #347650. I'm afraid we have to wait for the new libfreetype unless libtool is fixed. Regards, -- .''`.
