So the explicit disable of oss does leave me without sound what drives wine unusable for me. > Linux's platform-native API for audio is ALSA, so I would recommend > using ALSA and the in-tree drivers, together with a user-space audio > mixer such as PulseAudio or dmix. I gave alsa several tries. The best what I ever was able to get out was some cracking sound that breaks more when I move the mouse. The worst was several kernel panic. On the other hand, OSS always worked. The current wine was wittingly broken for this sound system without any reason. > The oss4 package has unfixed release-critical bugs that make it very > likely to be excluded from the next stable release of Debian; OSS4 > support was removed because the alternative would have been to > exclude wine and wine-development from the next stable release as > well, which I hope you would agree does not provide a solution for > your use-case either. I see no real breaking bug. Moreover, that is no reason to break wine support for the only working sound system. > If you must use OSS, using it via its libasound compatibility layer would > not put key packages like wine in danger of being removed when oss4 has > release-critical bugs. I wrote once with the current OSS4 maintainer. I think, it is pretty easy and strait forward to fix it. I will have a look into that bugs. But in this case there was a more complex logic implemented just to break OSS wittingly.
