Digging a bit on the topic, it doesn't seem like XFCE settings are shipped
(and some developers or users seem to say they don't really see the point of
mixing XFCE and compiz…), but there are MATE settings, which weren't applied
automatically.

I've just pushed a change to detect MATE being run through lightdm by
looking at some extra variable and checking update-alternatives settings.

I'm closing this bug report with the said upload, since I don't think we can
make things better for XFCE. Feel free to open an XFCE specific bug report
if you find some more info on that topic. Matching xfce4-session in addition
to mate-session, and acting accordingly, should be trivial.
