If gpg 1.4 can access the card via agent+scdaemon it uses these daemons
to access the card.  Thus many things should work.

If 1.4 can't do that it uses an old copy of the code used by scdaemon to
access the card.  That code is old and thus a lot of things won't work.

I can't suggest to use 1.4 with smardcards.
