I can confirm this also breaks when you *do* have an existing ~/.thunderbird directory (and no ~/.icedove directory/symlink).
Removing the comments fixes it. No idea how this got into unstable, when the test case is simply to start Thunderbird, perhaps it doesn't break if you have ~/.icedove ?
