 I just got upstream to look through the bugreports and help me weed
them out, and got a comment for this ancient one:

 Can you install the debug package (irssi-dbg in stable, and for
stretch/unstable the automatically built irssi-dbgsym one), step into
gdb and p that item's window to debug it further?  That would help
upstream a lot.  In case it still happens to you with current versions.
