How exactly do they compete for the "lid closed" event?
I was under the impression, that XFCE nowadays uses logind, does it not?

By changing that, we would most likely break other desktop environments, see
So I guess we can't simply switch the default but rather
xfce4-power-manager should handle lid switch events on its own.
