There currently is no man power to maintain a second branch of MATE on experimental.
The next upstream releases of MATE will appear in Debian, once the freeze is over. Please let us focus on making MATE 1.16 for Debian 9 ready for release. (I myself need to get back to that task, too. To many other open isssues that have more prio here, right now).
