Still, on latest Debian testing "stretch" with default GNOME desktop it does not work. Not only with this example - any metafont program displays empty window. Interesting observation: if I say, for example, "mf cmr10", then I can see the pictures (they are displayed in fast succession). FWIW, attached is the screenshot of the empty window. Igor
