(Hmm, why in earth would you want to create a non-free document? :-)

Even if you can't produce the exact final .dvi, I would try to produce
a .dvi anyway (maybe by using an alternative "periphery").

I don't know, really. Would rewriting from scratch count as "difficult"? :-)
