The xorg log now has much less noise, but still ends with this failure. Google "EVO Push buffer channel allocation failed" has a lot of (old) hits, but does not seem to be too helpful. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=132201 solved it with switching the system from i386 to amd64 You could report a bug to Nvidia, https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/522835/linux/if-you-have-a-problem-please-read-this-first/ but I don't have much hope that non-critical things get fixed in the legacy driver.
