Which upstream? vlc I suppose? Do you have a link to the discussion
handy?

That is something that I think should be possible but I wonder what
happens to the projects that already adopted the -1.8 naming. (Probably
this could be fixed by providing both, libupnp-1.8 and libupnp.)

It should even be possible to add these wrapper functions to 1.6 to ease
being compatible to both 1.6 and 1.8.

Now given that it doesn't seem sensible for Debian to divert from
upstream here, the big question is: Marcelo and Fabrice, what do you
think?
