Aha..! Well, I never read what Recommends means, I have just trusted apt-get as usual. (I trusted that it would give me any dependency I need to run the packages I wanted to install.)
I filed bugs against dselect and synaptic already because they didn't honor recommends in the default configuration on installs or upgrades.
