If a local DNS service is used, ntpdate when run from ifup will always fail, since the BIND named server is not started until well after network interfaces are configured and brought up. There should be an option to 1) disable calling ntpdate from ifup entirely https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=823533 2) allow a one shot ntpdate to run AFTER BIND named is started -- System Information: Debian Release: buster/sid APT prefers unstable-debug APT policy: (500, 'unstable-debug'), (500, 'testing-debug'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental-debug') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.14.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages ntpdate depends on: ii dpkg 1.19.0.4 ii libc6 2.25-6 ii libssl1.1 1.1.0g-2 ii netbase 5.4 ntpdate recommends no packages. ntpdate suggests no packages. -- Configuration Files: /etc/default/ntpdate [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/default/ntpdate' /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ntpdate [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ntpdate' /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/ntpdate [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/ntpdate' /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate' -- no debconf information
