OK, thanks!  From memory, I think the directory where the PID file is written 
is not statedir as configured through the autotools but rather something 
hardcoded in the source.

And just to clarify, by default Debian’s slurmd already writes its PID-file 
there, it’s just that startup-scripts expect the location to be customized (as 
is done through e.g. the default Debian configuration file).  However, I at 
least some slurm installations cannot use the Debian configuration file 
everywhere.
