It's clearly a kernel-level bug, though probably not be in the kernel itself, but in some module such as your graphic or sound card. I suggest you try reproducing the problem with ALSA level tools (other players, aplay, ...), and try pin-pointing the version of alsa-modules causing the bug (for example, try with the kernel's modules, try other kernel versions...).
