I think that wm4 just means that everything is too small. So this actually does not break anything and is the expected behavior. FYI, QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=0 QT_SCALE_FACTOR=2 vlc also yields a valid rendering with everything scaled by a factor 2 (wm4, doesn't this solve your issue?).
