For me the culprit was a spam message containing the ALARM CLOCK sign in the subject. Gnus therefore crashed emacs when it tried to display the summary line for that message. I got around the problem by temporarily deleting ``%s'' (that is, the subject) from gnus-summary-line-format. Then, carefully avoiding to show the message, I was able to delete that message from within the summary buffer. Hendrik
