Agreed.  The finer points to potential differences are lost to me.

One caveat: debian/patches/50_highlight-beyond-fill-column.diff
uses highlight-current-line's configuration group, thus I suspect
removing highlight-current-line's emacs-goodies custom configuration
will break highlight-beyond-fill-column.  Is beyond-fill-column also a
target for removal?

The following thread also has various reference to
whitespace-line-column (part of GNU Emacs), which sounds like it
provides the functionality of highlight-beyond-fill-column.  "The
author of highlight-80+.el [sounds like an alternate
highlight-beyond-fill-column] says its discontinued and recommends,
since Emacs 23, to use whitespace-mode's whitespace-line-column".
