In the meanwhile (in March 2018) this has been marked as fixed in VTE.

That also would have been my suggestion.

Thanks for the very explicit steps to reproduce

But I can not reproduce this as of now in unstable, at least not with
lxterminal (which is vte-based as well). (Haven't tried it earlier,
though.)

It seems as if the bug has been fixed in VTE in the meanwhile.

So I wonder if we still need that workaround in screen or if we can
just close this bug report.
