Hi, while testing Debian Edu Buster I tried to use NFS instead of NBD to speed things up and to save disk space; NFS seems to work with recent kernels (linux-image-4.17.0-1-amd64 atm): no issues as far as I can tell. As the switch from NFS to NBD (commit 9aba277) happened some time ago due to an incompatibility between the kernel overlay filesystem and NFS, it might now be possible to switch back. Please test.
