I found the problem. It was user error on my part. I had a
self-compiled ~/opt/bin/mandelbulber2 earlier in my PATH (I guess it is
a separate upstream bug that it tries to access files outside of its
installed prefix). Using /usr/bin/mandelbulber2 (or modifying PATH to
remove ~/opt/bin) works correctly. Sorry for wasting your time!

Or for the latter file to be in the initial location.
I see not error messages and the Amazing Surf Mod2 formula loads
correctly. Could you please provide a settings file that fails loading?
Also, could you try to remove or rename the directories "mandelbulber"
and ".mandelbulber" in your home directory and try again? Maybe there
was some leftover from past versions.
