With the unpatched version, I got "nächstes", with your patch I got "Next". But I also got makeinfo's error messages in English.
Maybe make info used a unpatched makeinfo?
I think I double-checked that it didn't. After applying your patch, I installed the texinfo package with $ ./configure --prefix=/home/sven/tmp/texinfo; make install , deleted the Emacs info files and then ran $ PATH=/home/sven/tmp/texinfo/bin:$PATH make info from the top-level dir of the Emacs source. And $ PATH=/home/sven/tmp/texinfo/bin:$PATH makeinfo --version showed up the patched version string.
