I'm using sbuild on a single-cpu virtual machine, so no, I'm not accidentally deleting anything. Please try using sbuild on a single-cpu virtual machine, and, if you still can't reproduce it, I could offer a virtual machine for you to ssh into it and see it directly (please contact me privately for details).
