Maybe it's a bad habit nowadays, but I got in the habit years ago, when I had a slower internet connection, of updating software in aptitude individually, which I also like because it lets me keep tabs on what's pulling in what. Usually this works fine, because if software needs a newer version of a library it bumps the >= in the dependency, but in this case the unversioned depends on libxapian30 meant the upgrade didn't get pulled in.
