Thank you for your report. This is caused by a security bugfix in stable. There we tried to change as less code as possible and still be able to fix the bug. My estimation is that the code you mentioned was already broken at that point, only the fix triggered that brokenness. As you might know we cannot do bugfix updates to stable. However, I will see if this is simply fixable, if it is, it might be included in a future stable-security update as a fix to the previous security fix. If it's not a simple fix then I guess we're out of luck. Current SquirrelMail in testing/unstable is not affected, tagging as such.
