Perhaps I am missing something, but it seems to work for me:

$ echo 'foo,bar.baz' | awk '{n = patsplit($0,a,/[^,|.]*/,b); for(i=1;i<=n;i++) 
print a[i] " " b[i]}'
foo ,
bar .
baz 
$
