the mozilla-firefox package (version 1.0.7) doesn't use pango, while firefox (newest 1.5 releases) use it. It is known that the firefoxes using pango have better rendering of indic scripts, though not having a clue about it myself, I can't tell you ;) Anyway, I'd recommend you to try out the firefox package from unstable.
