I wrote alias into /etc/aliases as hinted in upstream documentation:

ran newaliases and sent mail with subject "help" to sympa@domain.
I had a similar issue. Adding this alias to /etc/mail/sympa/aliases
instead of /etc/aliases seemed to solve it (after having configured a
sympa_aliases router as in the first section of
<https://www.sympa.org/faq/exim>).
