Dear Francis, Festival does not support UTF-8. You should send the text to festival with ISO-8859-15 encoding.
The accented character ò is represented by two bytes in UTF-8. Festival interprets those two bytes as two ISO-8859-15 characters, one of them being the copyright symbol. That's why you are hearing "copyright". You can probably use iconv to do the character encoding conversion.
