I'm able to open the file with the Kate editor and when I do so, in the bottom right of the window it displays "UTF-16LE". This is what encguess says: $ encguess *.log Chipset_20160403204652_0_SetupChipsetx64.msi.log UTF-16 I can also produce a smaller text file that leafpad fails to correctly open: $ echo Test. | iconv -t UTF16 -o test-utf16.txt Regards, Juhani -- System Information: Debian Release: 9.6 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable-debug'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE= (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages leafpad depends on: ii libc6 2.24-11+deb9u3 ii libcairo2 1.14.8-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.50.3-2 ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.31-2 ii libpango-1.0-0 1.40.5-1 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.40.5-1 leafpad recommends no packages.
