I assumed that the existing code in debian/rules which copied the
updated files was good enough.

Apparantly the files are copied to the wrong location as is clear from
the below log snippet...

I have confirmed on a GNU/kFreeBSD system that it works and will upload
a fixed package shortly (as it should have been fixed already in my
previous NMU...).
