merged-usr is completely disabled in the git master of mmdebstrap upstream. The --merged-usr and --no-merged-usr flags are just no-op options for compatibility. That's why they are not documented. A new upstream release of mmdebstrap is currently blocked by #909637 which in turn is blocked by #915559. I intend to remove mmdebstrap from buster if #915559 does not get resolved in time, because one of the main purposes of mmdebstrap is to create a Debian chroot without being root. And the only way to do that on a plain Debian system right now is to use fakechroot (proot produces wrong ownership information). So without fakechroot, mmdebstrap is not very useful and should rather not be part of buster. Thanks! cheers, josch
