I had Noto and two more fonts providing U+1F6D1. I uninstalled the other two, leaving only Noto, and now I can reproduce the crash. It is definitely an upstream bug that happens even with the latest git tip (as of 3be4cf11). I will report it there, unless you want to report it yourself (see https://suckless.org/community/).
