I've been running 4.2 for a while and I find the behaviour better in
4.2.

I suspect this will never be fixed in the 4.0.x series.

You can find 4.2 packages at:
http://the.earth.li/~huggie/xfce4/ but you will have to forego the
goodies packages if you use them (or recompile them yourself) until 4.2
versions of those enter the archive.
